What is ERP for OCD?

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) specifically designed to treat Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). It focuses on gradually exposing individuals to their fears and obsessions while preventing them from engaging in compulsive behaviors. Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is the gold standard behavioral treatment for OCD and expert consensus suggests ERP as first line treatment in children and adolescents.

How does ERP work?

  1. Exposure: Individuals are gradually exposed to situations or thoughts that trigger their obsessions and anxieties. This can be done through real-life situations (in vivo exposure), imagining the feared situation (imaginal exposure), or focusing on physical sensations associated with anxiety (interoceptive exposure).

  2. Response Prevention: Patients are taught to resist the urge to perform compulsive behaviors or rituals that they typically use to reduce anxiety. Instead, they learn to tolerate the discomfort and anxiety that arises during exposure.

The goal of ERP is to:

  • Break the cycle between obsessions and compulsions.

  • Challenge negative thoughts and beliefs associated with OCD.

  • Help individuals develop coping strategies to manage anxiety and distress.

  • Reduce the frequency and intensity of OCD symptoms.
